I would choose for you case 4-door 4-cyl not sporty car, preferably Japan make, cause it cost much cheaper to insure for begginer drivers. You also need to check before buying insurance rates here – http://carinsurance.deep-ice.com

It is a great first car. It is VERY reliable. Very easy to work on. Cheap to fix and maintain. There are Many after market parts. They handle like sports cars so they are fun to drive.
Most teenage guys go for the Mazdaspeed 3 since it has a 265HP turbocharged engine. But if you can't afford that, a regular Mazda 3 is still fun.

It depends on how old it is. I had a 2001 626 for my first car and it was 8 years old when I bought it and it lasted me through high school and a year of college and now my sisters are using it for their first cars. It wasn't bad for a first car, but it isn't my first choice now for a car because it does require a lot of maintenance to keep it running and remember it is part ford so that explains it breaking down early on me, but if you like working on cars then it can be a fun car to see how good you can keep it running. My next cars are going to be hondas because they do run a lot smoother than the mazdas and other cars do and they last a lot longer without as much attention. I'm assuming that the 626 and 3 are prob about the same as an Accord is to a Civic because the 626 is the predecessor to the 6 which is the upgrade to the 3 so they're prob pretty similar. Other recommendations for a first car would be a civic or a corolla.

have it checked out by a mechanic before you buy
